Ambrosia beetles are farmers. They carry fungi in special pockets on their bodies and grow them as food, a partnership that has evolved independently at least a dozen times. But when these beetles spread to new regions, some of their fungal crops become devastating tree killers. Until recently, researchers lacked the genetic tools to study many of them.

In a study published in Fungal Biology and Biotechnology, Joseph et al. (2026) show that genetic tools developed for one ambrosia beetle fungus can be used to genetically modify several of its diverse relatives.

To build these tools, the researchers used Plasmidsaurus ZeroPrep to verify that their plasmids contained the intended sequences.

This work opens the door to studying how these partnerships work, and how some turn harmful.

With its enormous claws, Therizinosaurus looked like a formidable predator. But this dinosaur was likely a herbivore, a reminder that appearances don’t always tell the whole story.

The same can be true for cell cultures.

Mycoplasma can alter cell signaling and gene expression without causing obvious changes in the culture. Everything may look fine while unwanted contamination affects the biology you’re trying to measure.

Your RNA-Seq data can help uncover what isn’t visible. Plasmidsaurus now includes mycoplasma screening with all RNA-Seq results. We analyze non-host reads and screen for nine mycoplasma and related species, looking for strong evidence of contamination.
