🦠 What if we could make bacterial biofilms easier to break?

A new study published in PLOS Pathogens by Piazza et al. (2026) uncovered a previously unknown pathway that helps Pseudomonas aeruginosa build stable biofilms and survive antibiotics.

The researchers identified a new biofilm regulatory protein, BatR, and found that it interacts with the stress response enzyme SrkA in a previously unknown signaling network.

Plasmidsaurus Whole Genome Sequencing of P. aeruginosa escape mutants provided clues about how bacteriophage Pf4 contributes to cell death and eDNA release in mature biofilms.

🍺 Can yeast collected from a 250-year-old tree recreate colonial-style beer?

This question was explored by The Bochman Group, who study DNA helicases and genome integrity using the model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Earlier this year, they put an unusual yeast to the test: S. cerevisiae DoF1, collected from a 250-year-old oak tree.

Along the way, they made a discovery about the yeast’s genome integrity and identity. Plasmidsaurus Whole Genome Sequencing revealed that their yeast isolate, S. cerevisiae DoF1, was a bona fide wild strain—not a lab strain or brewery contaminant.

What if antibiotic resistance could spread between bacteria inside a patient’s lungs?

Published in Nature Microbiology, Karash et al. (2026) show that resistance-carrying plasmids can move between bacterial species inside patients’ lungs during chronic infections, rapidly spreading antibiotic resistance.

The researchers identified plasmids carrying aminoglycoside resistance genes, including the newly identified aac(3)-IIId. Likely originating from environmental bacteria, these plasmids transferred between species and conferred resistance to tobramycin.

To uncover how this was happening, the team used Plasmidsaurus Whole Genome Sequencing to resolve complete bacterial genomes and plasmids from more than 140 clinical isolates.
